Internet Radio is a fantastic thing. It is more popular than ever with the tremendous increase in Web Active cell phones, and other small mobile devices like the newest tablet computers and highly portable WiFI machines.
The Internet Radio stations are customizable, and the users can shape what they are hearing to their own taste, while being exposed to new artists as well. Most of this is supported by advertising, which is minimal. The ads can be turned off by paying a monthly user fee, and as a bonus the fee paying user gets better sound quality.
Should you consider buying stock in one of these online companies?
The largest Internet Radio Station recently had their IPO and the stock went up 45 quickly, then faded to a more realistic level, actually settling in right around the offering price. Analysts feel that the future growth is there with more and more people buying mobile devices and enjoying their music on them. The days of carrying MP3 players and cell phones and laptops are going away as more users carry one mobile device for all these functions.
New Internet Radio stations are entering the market, and the future is bright. But as with any stock investment, you should carefully analyze the financial picture, and then make an educated decision on whether or not this investment is right for your portfolio. You thought this was good? Brace yourself: Live365 Releases Android Application with Access to Thousands of Free Internet Radio Stations

Everyone has used the radio at one point in their lives. The moment you sit in a car, you’re reaching for the radio dials and finding your favorite station. But for some of us who work jobs very far away from our home towns (like myself for some time) or even radio aficionados, that station is just not available on the local dial. That station has to be found through the Internet.

Internet radio began in the early 1990s in Washington, before many people were even using the Internet. It started with a few bands in Washington, but then people took notice when the Rolling Stones had broadcasted their concert over the Internet. Eventually, traditional radio stations began appearing on the internet as streaming feeds as well. As popularity in computers and the Internet began to boom, more people began tuning in. Windows Media Player and Winamp became free downloads at this time, greatly increasing listener base of internet radio stations.

Then, things looked dark for the future of Internet radio. The passing of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act in 1998 made it a little more expensive for legitimate Internet radio stations: they would have to pay more royalties than traditional stations to play the same music. There was an enormous backlash as a result. Even large radio stations would fail financially with the business model proposed by the DMCA. A grassroots effort emerged to help save Internet radio from its own collapse.

Eventually, this financial issue was worked out, and today, there are thousands of Internet radio stations available. Traditional air stations are using the Internet to broadcast to fans far away from their signals, and some people are even constructing fanbases of their own by just running the station out of their homes. If you ever wanted to hear a great radio station, they can be found on the Internet.

Streaming media is one of the true wonders of the internet. As high speed internet has become more common services that stream either radio, television or other media have flourished. Streaming media allows you to enjoy internet media without using up valuable space on your computer. But how does it work?

Here’s a basic overview of how streaming media works. When you connect to an internet radio station or start streaming a movie the first thing your computer does is set up a buffer. A buffer is simply a saved portion of the program you’re watching or listening to. It uses a buffer so that if you connection temporarily slows the program won’t be interrupted. Once the buffer is complete the program starts to play. As the program plays your computer the buffer is constantly updated. The computer removes the portion of the program you’ve played and adds new information from the radio station or media site.

This is why streaming media is called streaming. You get a constant trickle of either live or recorded data to your computer. This process lets you enjoy your favorite radio station or other media in a close to live format from anywhere in the world.

Internet radio is simply a great thing for music lovers. These services will let you tailor the music to your liking, and remember your choices for the next time you log in.
Advertising keeps the free portion of these services alive. But if you opt in for a paid subscription you can get a better overall experience.
Pandora is one of best liked internet radio services. There is a huge selection of music available with regular audio ads running between songs on a set schedule. The artist or genre or song type is matched by to others you may like and you can click the thumbs up or down to hear more if you choose. Pay their small annual membership fee of 36 and you get no audio advertising and top notch sound quality. This is their Pandora One subscriber service.
Grooveshark is a radio service that is simple to use and has a few inexpensive upgrades. The main feature is seeing other member playlists that have songs similar to what you select. For extra monthly fees you can get Grooveshark Anywhere, which is made for your web active phone. A bit less monthly gives you access to Grooveshark Plus which eliminates advertising.
These are two of the best internet radio services, and they only get better when you opt in for their extra fees.

Internet radio is widely available today, and with the strong adoption of 3g and 4g cell phones, the future is bright. There are also applications available to let you use internet radio at home or in the car, without a computer.
The best free internet radio services around today include:
Pandora. This is a site that has been around for a number of years now. It offers both free and paid subscriptions. The free service is accompanied by 10 to 15 second ads that run every so often, but still much less than on any commercial standard radio station.
Pandora will let the user select an artist a genre or a song title, the music will be played and then similar music will come up automatically and play. The user has the option of selecting approval or not for the songs, and Pandora will shape what comes up afterwards to tweak the sounds it presents for you. You can easily learn about the artists or songs, and will find new ones that you may never have heard before.
Last.fm is a free internet radio service based in London, England with an easy to navigate home page. The genres of music are presented along the left side, and currently popular selections that others are listening to are displayed in the middle of the page. Select a musical style or artist and the station will play. Last.fm offers similar music for you to choose if you like.
There are many other choices in free internet radio services, but these two are at the top.

Internet radio is a method of audio transmission that is similar to conventional radio. Unlike the traditional radio signal, Internet radio is broadcast instantly to computers or other electronic devices by way of the Internet.

There are different categories of Internet radio which include standard regular FM/AM radio, music suggestion, or a radio network soley for the Internet; streaming technology is used for all of these. When an audio or video signal is streamed it is constantly being acquired by a user in a signal. Streaming media is built-in to a form of Internet radio where traditional radio stations are broadcast over the Internet. It is broadcast in real time as it is being broadcast over traditional radio airwaves.

Music recommendation is a type of Internet radio. For example, Pandora Radio plays songs that are like the ones you request. You can request an artist and a song by that artist is played; when that song is finished a similar one will play. Pandora decides what is similar from ones that their own staff and Pandora users have ranked as alike. A favorite for many is Internet radio station, www.slackerradio.com which is also a music recommendation.

Internet exclusive radio networks include SHOUTcast. This type of radio contains content exclusive to the Internet and is created by both and professionals non-professionals. Internet exclusive radio works just like AM/FM radio, but is broadcast using the Internet.

I recently had to relocate from the San Francisco Bay Area to Charlotte, and although it was a hard move because I’d be leaving such an incredibly diverse region of the country, one of the most difficult things to leave behind was my favorite Bay Area radio station. Not only did they play incredible tunes that were quite frequently cutting edge and avant-garde, but just listing to the dj’s provided a cool SF vibe that’s hard to come by. Fortunately the radio station is owned by Cumulus which owns a total portfolio of 350 stations nationwide (ranging from Abilene to Youngstown) and they stream their broadcasts live via the internet. What that means is that I can be sitting in my living room in Charlotte while I listen to the pulse of the Bay Area and feel like I’m still right there in the thick of things. In fact, I recently went back to SF for 10 days of fun, and it was by listening to my station via Cumulus before leaving that I was able to tap into which concerts and live music venues I was going to put on my itinerary while planning visits with friends from the area. While my Bay Area station is a classic rock format, Cumulus covers them all from country to sports talk and everything in between. So, if you’re ever feeling house-bound and want to take a trip to another city without leaving the comfort of your own home, why not take a trip via Cumulus and get put right in the center of a city’s music and news scene.

Whether you’re blasting top 40 hits in your dorm room or listening to a smooth jazz station in your headphones at work, the Internet is becoming an increasingly popular medium for listening to tunes. Over the last few years, there has been a shift towards user-selected internet radio. The concept of these sites is to give you a reprieve from having to listen to songs on a generic station, half of which you probably don’t even enjoy. More specialized and specific stations cater to personal tastes and are a great way to introduce new artists with music similar to your favorite songs.Slacker Personal Radio: A free account on this site allows you to either create your own station of pick from hundreds of already created playlists. You can mark tracks you don’t like and make a note of one’s you do to help the program pick only ones that will appeal to you. If you like this site as much as we do, you’ll want to upgrade to Slacker Radio Plus, which lets you request songs, skip as many tracks as you want, and eliminates advertisements.Pandora: One of the most popular of its kind, users can create stations by either entering an artist’s name or a song title and the system begins playing songs with similar musical attributes. You also have the opportunity of buying any of the songs you hear using online music retailers.Live 365: In addition to creating your own station, you can stream other users’ stations, which is a great way to hear new, less-played songs. Like Slacker, you can also upgrade your account to a “VIP Membership” for commercial-free listening.Jango: While listening to their customized stations, users can designate a song as “play often” “play sometimes” or “play never.” Similar to the other stations, free accounts unfortunately come with advertisements.

Just as we’ve all come to love Internet radio and struggle to imagine music before this came to be, a recent legislative decision could jeopardize the entire system. Traditionally, as payment for streaming music, Internet radio webcasters were required to pay an annual fee along with a certain percentage of profits. However, performers who are suffering from lost revenues have been pushing hard for a pay per performance fee. Before the change in legislation, money was paid to songwriters and performers received royalties, but rough times in the recording business are causing a push for this new system. What recording artists seem to forget is that it’s illegal downloads that are causing their wallets to shrink, not legal, license-holding radio stations. In fact, we’ve all seen better days. The new fee system requires a flat fee per song that is played. However, since this change in 2007, the rate has gone up every year. This year the fee is .0019 per performance. At first glance this number seems microscopic. But unlike AM and FM radio broadcasters who play one song for thousands of listeners to hear, Internet radio lets each user create their own station and stream songs at their own pace. Translation: Internet radio webcasters are paying a lot more money. Not only does this pose a threat to the survival of many of the smaller sized Internet radio stations, the ones who manage to survive may have to begin limiting the number of songs you can listen to. Another negative effect this is having on online radio stations is a bombardment of advertising. Though it may be hard to remember, there was a time when your Pandora station was never interrupted by an audio advertisement. We’ve also become accustomed to having our music stopped every so often with the banner that asks if you’re still listening. Why? Because, just like it says, these companies have to pay for every song that they play.We won’t deny for a minute that recording artists have taken a huge hit as a result of the Internet with illegal downloads and file sharing. But, don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

One of the biggest appeals of Internet radio is that you get a chance to hear different genres and songs that would never be played on a mainstream FM station. Most music played on traditional radio stations is work done by a well-known recording artist, and getting your music heard on one of these stations can be nearly impossible. Conversely, online stations are much more receptive to new artists and this is a great starting point if you’re trying to give your music career the push it needs. Each site has a different policy for accepting new music, but it is almost always easier that what you can expect from a terrestrial radio station. On AM and FM radio, it is illegal for broadcasters to accept money from an artist or recording company to have their music played on the station. However, this regulation has not yet been extended to Internet radio.Jango offer artists the option to pay 10 to have their songs played 250 times. Unlike traditional radio where you have no idea who will be listening to your work, with Jango you can designate the types of stations you would like your music played on. You can choose popular artists that you think your style resembles and have your work played on stations created with them in mind. If your music is received well by fans you could be awarded more plays. Reports gathered by the website will also help you understand what type of listeners enjoyed your music the most.Another music service offering independent artists opportunities to expose their work is Last.fm. With this site, artists can upload their music to the site to be added to the list of streaming music. If you want to increase your number of plays or have more control over which stations play your songs, this can be done by paying a fee.
